Hip resurfacing has a number of advantages over total hip replacement

Bone conservation - in a resurfaced hip most of the femoral head and all of the femoral neck is preserved. This is highly desirable since bone loss is frequently a major issue when a total hip replacement fails.

Low wear bearing - the high carbon, chrome cobalt alloy bearing is subject to very low rates of wear. This is important, as accumulated wear debris is a factor in implant failure.

Large diameter bearing - in a resurfaced hip the femoral head is larger than after replacement and similar in size to the biological hip. This allows a greater range of movement.
