risks

Whilst the cumulative risk and spectrum of complications are similar to those following total hip replacement the following points are relevant to hip resurfacing

  • The operation is relatively new so that the long-term results are not known.
  • There is a risk of femoral neck fracture, of the order of 1%, particularly in older females. Such fractures do not occur after total hip replacement since most of the femoral neck is removed.
  • Metal ion concentrations in the blood stream may rise after operation but there is no current evidence to suggest that this is a significant concern.
  • Surgeon experience is vital as hip resurfacing is a technically difficult operation and there is a long learning curve.

It is in your interest to ask your surgeon about his/her experience and results.
